Frankfurter Villa

At the beginning of each month I want to show you places where I’d rather be at that very moment. As you know I am constantly either travelling or dreaming of travelling and I want to share my favourite bars, restaurants, hotels, cities and countries around the world with you. And I am looking for your recommendations for my next trips.
* * *

After a bit far-away dreaming last month, I want to share a beautiful hotel with you today that is a bit closer by. If you live in Europe anyway ;-)

I have been in Frankfurt on business trips quite a bit and I haven’t found many nice hotels. None to be honest. Until a colleague recommended this one to me – and from then on I never stayed anywhere else. It is lovely! It is close to the centre, but a bit away from the action. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the food is so yummy that once I was almost late for my meeting because I could finish breakfast and the drinks at the little bar are not bad either. There is nothing more relaxing than reading a book at the library with a wonderful red in your hand, before soaking yourself in one of the old-fashioned bath tubs and then falling into a canopy bed. After such an evening, I promise, it doesn’t feels like a business trip anymore.

The most amazing canopy bad I have ever seen – so modern, so luxurious, so big and not a sign of romantic princess style. I love it!!!

The modern yet luxurious style continues in the bathroom. Old-fashioned lion-footed tub meets clean chic.

Aren’t these door plates just the cutest? I wish I would have a pair like these at home and someone would act according to these adorable orders. Please don’t disturb – I need my beauty sleep ;-)

Where: Hebelstraße 1, 60318 Frankfurt/Main, Germany
phone: (0049) 069 40584-0, fax (0049) 069 40584-100, email: contact@villa-orange.de

Highlight: well-stocked library with great books and not only trashy novels like in so many other hotel libraries

My first snow...

... in 3 years!

I woke up this morning and the roofs were white. The clouds were full of more snow. And I felt like a little child. SNOW!!!

I love Australia, but in the long run, I just couldn’t live without this:

Happy winter to all of you!

21 years after the Wall came down...

picture found here

... I am so grateful that it cannot keep Andi and me apart anymore.

... I am so happy that my beloved Berlin isn’t a divided city anymore.

... I only live 50 meters from where it stood.

... I love to divide my time between the former East and the former West Berlin.

... I am glad that our daughter will only know it from history class and stories.

Things I wear for the first time in 3 years...

... because there was no use for them in Australia:

At the moment I enjoy wearing them as much as I enjoy eating German ‘Wurst’ and bakery specialities again. I am not sure, however, that I will feel the same a few winter months on ;-)

Finally back...

Lovely readers – if I still have any. I am so SORRY! I have been away from this little blog much longer than I planned and hoped. But the past few weeks and the move back to Germany have been busier than anticipated. Oh well! From now on, there will be more news on this poor neglected blog, because...

... it is done: We have put all our belongings in Australia into 3 suitcases and a shipping container. We have flown to Germany with our little girl. We have spent a lot of time with our families and friends. We have found a beautiful new apartment in the centre of Berlin. We have spent a lot of time at various administrative offices and hardware stores.

... well, it is almost done: We have still some organisational stuff to organise. We still have to spend a lot of time in hardware stores and IKEA. We still want to spend more time with our family and friends. We still have to move into our apartment. We still have to unpack our shipping container.

BUT

We are back home.

Hello and goodbye

We are off to Germany in 10 DAYS – 240 HOURS – 14400 MINUTES....

This week and a half will be crazy with packing boxes, saying farewell to our Australian friends, cleaning the apartment, getting the little one ready for her big trip... Crazy organisation and moving stuff!

Emotionally I am ambivalent.

One the one hand side I am so happy and excited to go back to my family. To my friends who know me for decades. To my country. To my Berlin. To people who speak the same mother language than I. To food that I have missed. To stores in which I haven’t shopped at in 3 years.

On the other hand I am sad to leave Australia. My new friends. My Melbourne. My travel adventures. My job challenges. The place that really has been home for the past 3 years. My fresh seafood.

I am afraid I won’t have much time to post on this little blog of mine. Therefore I have prepared some Hello-Goodbye posts for the next week. To show you all the things I look forward to in Germany and all the Australian things I will terribly miss.

Neither here nor there

Sorry, I know it has been a bit quiet around here recently. The reason for this is not my cute little bundle of joy. She is still incredible good - feeding well, sleeping good, being a happy baby unless there is wind in her little tummy.

No, the reason for me spending time away from my blog is that my lovely husband and I realised that we will be really moving to Germany in just 5 weeks. Aaaaahhhh! Therefore we spent the last few days putting together immense To-Do-Lists and throwing ourselves in getting them done: booking flights, applying for Vicky's passport at the embassy, organising the shipping of our container, starting to sell everything we don't want to take with us, meeting people we might not see for a long time,... I don't want to bother you with all the details, but it is a lot.

But since we have also got a lot done in the last couple of days and feel very organised now, we decided to take the weekend off. So here I am sitting in front of my laptop with a beautiful cuppa (cup of tea), my lovely husband is still asleep and the little one is 'playing' on her baby quilt next to me. It is cold and stormy outside and life is good.

Wish you all a wonderful weekend!
